The Bishop of Damongo, Most Rev. Peter Paul Y. Angkyier, has highlighted the steady growth and enduring faith of the Catholic Church in the Damongo Diocese, despite social and developmental challenges facing the area.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Annual Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) at Damongo on Monday, 10th November, 2025, Bishop Angkyier expressed gratitude to God for the Diocese’s progress since its establishment, noting the Church’s growing role in education, healthcare, and social development.
The Diocese currently manages 233 church-based schools, including kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as part of its mission to combat high illiteracy rates — estimated at over 70% in the region. Bishop Angkyier also noted that the Church runs a well-equipped hospital in Damongo, several health centers and clinics, and has provided over 300 boreholes to supply clean water to rural communities.

He attributed this growth to the commitment of the clergy, religious, and lay faithful, adding that the Diocese continues to champion peacebuilding, justice, and reconciliation as central pillars of its evangelization mission.
“Peace, justice, and the well-being of our people remain at the heart of our pastoral work,” he affirmed. “Though our facilities may not match those of larger cities, our faith and spirit of service continue to grow stronger.”

The Damongo Diocese, he emphasized, stands as a beacon of faith and resilience offering hope and development in one of Ghana’s most underserved regions.
