The people of Damongo were left in shock on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, when a newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned at a refuse site in the Hangaline Community. The Assembly Member for Hangaline/Ngbaripe/Alhassankura electoral area, Hon. Kumartey Gordon (DJ Flenxy), confirmed the incident, describing it as one of the most disturbing moments in the community’s history.

In a gesture of solidarity and compassion, Assembly Members of the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, led by their Presiding Member, Hon. Mumuni Mohammed, visited the hospital to check on the baby’s condition. They presented a donation of GH₵1,000 to support the upkeep of the child.

Hospital Accountant, Mr. Damba Rashid, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the assembly members for their leadership and generosity.

“They came here in their numbers and did not come empty-handed. Their donation of a thousand Ghana cedis is a great show of leadership. We thank them sincerely and also appeal to the people of Damongo and the public at large to continue supporting this innocent child,” he said.

Mr. Rashid assured that the funds would be appropriately managed and, should the baby later be placed under the care of Social Welfare or another guardian, the money will follow the child to ensure his wellbeing.

The Presiding Member, Hon. Mumuni Mohammed, explained the motivation behind the donation:
“After our General Assembly meeting, we found it necessary to visit the baby ourselves and make this token contribution. We are happy to learn from the hospital that the child is healthy, and we can only pray that God will keep him and make him someone great in the future.”

The tragic discovery has sparked widespread discussions in Damongo about child protection, parental responsibility, and the need for stronger social support systems. Many residents have described the act as heartbreaking but have praised the swift response of the eyewitness, health officials, and assembly members.

For now, the abandoned baby remains in safe care at St. Anne’s Hospital, with hopes that the support from leaders and the community will give him a chance at a brighter future.
