The acting President of the Queen mothers Association in the Techiman traditional area, Nana Yeboaa Asuama III has appealed to residents of the country to revisit the indigenous foods which were healthier and healing.
Nana Asuama said the older generation fed on local delicacies namely ‘nuhuu’, mpohunumu , fufu and ‘abunabunu’ soup, ‘eto’ and ‘ogoo’ among other delicious meals which boosted their immunity against diseases.
She noted that the current generation was attracted to exotic meals such as fast foods and other oily and salty concentrated foods which, according to her, had shortened the life of people of our time.
Nana Yeboaa Asuama who doubled as the Adontenhemaa of Techiman disclosed that people in the olden days enjoyed traditional desert namely palm – wine, ginger and ‘soro wisa’ wine and pitoo compared to sugary canned beverages today.
She said this on Friday at a traditional food cooking competition which was organised by Sankofa Yenkyi, a non – profitable group for Queen mothers here in Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital.
The programme was on the theme, “promoting health and healing through our indigenous foods and culture” and it brought together queen mothers from Kenten, Tuobodom, Agosa, Faaman, Nkwaeso, Bouyem, among other communities.
About 50 Queen mothers who participated in the competition prepared sumptuous meals namely, ‘chrinkaase’ soup and ‘bayere fufuo’, ‘tokomtokom’, ‘aprapransa’ , ‘apiti’, ‘kyekyereno’, ‘nkesenkese’, ‘nuhuu’ and ‘akao’ and pepper stew among other delicacies.
The group President of Sankofa Yenkyi, Nana Adiepena Akua Acheampomaa, said research have shown that food in our time had resulted in many ailments which had caused many deaths thus the need to revisit our olden days food.
” this show will be replicated across the country to educate and create awareness on the usefulness of revisiting our indigenous foods and culture to ensure the health and prolong life of the populace”. She noted
Nana Acheampomaa thanked the Queen mother of Techiman traditional area, Nana Afia Abrafi II, the Center for National Culture, Kente royal house, Joy bridal decor and beauty parlour among others for supporting the event.
Nana Kwame Barfi I, the Chief of New Onyinase ,who chaired the ceremony was happy for Sankofa Yenkyi and the Queen mothers Association for creating the learning avenue for the new generation.
He urged the young women of the country to learn the preparation, health and healing benefits, history and culture about our indigenous foods saying that ” without history, your past is bleak and your future is unknown”.
