During the King’s maiden Damba festival at the Jakpa Palace on October 3rd, 2023, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akufo Dampare for enhanced security measures in the Savannah Region.
The King’s message, delivered by Mandariwura Gilbert Seidu Iddi, expressed appreciation for the elevation of the Bole Police Command to a divisional command status by the IGP and called for the establishment of a police post in the Mpaha area and other security-sensitive locations to combat crime effectively.
Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I) further made a heartfelt plea to the government to consider creating new Districts and Municipalities in the Savannah Region.
He justified this request by citing the vast landmass and economic potential of the region, emphasizing that such administrative changes would alleviate issues of isolation within the kingdom, stimulate investment, provide better market access, and bolster overall economic activity.
The King also commended former President John Dramani Mahama and MP for Damongo, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, for their unwavering support for tradition, which contributes to the kingdom’s pride.
He also expressed gratitude to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Hon. Amoako Atta, for promptly addressing the Bole-Doli bridge issue, calling for a permanent solution and the rehabilitation of the Wa – Bamboi road stretch.
In his address on behalf of the special Guest of Honour, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the MP for Damongo and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor urged the people of the Savannah Region to prioritize peace and unity, as the region’s development hinges on harmonious coexistence.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, the Guest of Honour, touched on the recent voter registration exercise and stressed the importance of voter transfers.
He expressed concern about deforestation in the region, particularly the depletion of economic trees like Shea trees and called for the implementation of laws to safeguard these vital resources.
Mahama also commended the Gonja Kingdom for its enduring commitment to peace, considering it a significant step in the right direction.
In attendance to grace the occasion were the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Muhazu Jibriel, MDCE’s from the Savannah region, MP’s, regional executives of both the NPP and NDC, the Catholic Bishop for Damongo and other prominent son’s and daughters of the Gonja Kingdom.
