Peter Paul Angkyier has blessed and dedicated another Outstation chapel for the people of Achubonyo under St. Peter cCanisius parish of the Catholic Diocese of Damongo in the West Gonja municipality of the Savannah region on Sunday 22nd August, 2021.
In a sermon, H. E. Most Rev Henryk Mieczyslaw Jagodzinski explained that, the church is a spiritual temple with an ultimate goal of which all faithfuls are united for one duty. He continued that, the spiritual duty of the temple is for all christians having different roles to perform in the church towards enhancing the experience of God.
H. E. Most Rev. Henryk also explained that, each one of the children of God has different roles to play as members of the body of christ and that we as christians have a spiritual contribution to make towards the growth of the church irrespective of ones ethnicity or occupation.
Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh, the parish priest of St. Peter Canisius in an address explained that Achubonyo became an Outstation of the St. Anne’s parish, Damongo since 1986 under the administration of the missionaries of Africa until the year 2004 when the administration was handed over to the Diocesan clergy.
Rev. fr. Lazarus further explained that the Achubonyo community currently has a population of about 800 people with the Gonjas as land owners and the majority tribe in the area.
Achubonyo as an Islamic dominated community has a Catholic population of about 60 with some of its members relocating due to the invasion of the fulani cattle on their farms.
He continued that, the Achubonyo community had no chapel since the people are plagued by abject poverty and could not have afforded to put up any cement block church than resorting to the use of a classroom and subsequently putting up a mud bricks structure which never survived any of the rainy seasons.
He thanked the chiefs and people of Achubonyo for offering them the land for the building of the church and to the Bishop of the diocese Most Rev. Peter Paul Angkyier for his role played towards the realization of the new chapel through the director of the Pontifical Mission Societies to the congregation of the faith.
The Bishop of the Damongo Diocese, Most Rev Peter Paul Angkyier expressed gratitude to the contractor, Mr Paul Kelly and his team for accepting the responsibility to use the resources given them to raise the church and that the building is a beautiful edifice and it is by the grace of God that they were able to do their work successfully without any accidents. He named the new church as St. Godfrey Catholic Church – Achubonyo.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana was in the Diocese of Damongo for a four-day pastoral visit to the Diocese.
