On Tuesday, 27th February, 2024, during a general meeting of the Savannah Regional house of Chiefs at Damongo, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the esteemed King and overlord of the Gonja Kingdom and President of the Savannah regional house of chiefs in a resounding welcome address speech read on his behalf by the Registrar of the Savannah Regional house of Chiefs, Mr. Abutu Kapori, underscored the pivotal role of unity, legacy-building, and environmental conservation in the development of the Savannah Region.
HRM Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I commended the collaborative efforts of chiefs in the Savannah Region, emphasizing their indispensable contributions to the elevation of the region on the global stage and urged them to redouble their efforts in achieving esteemed milestones for the region, emphasizing a legacy-focused approach to governance.
The king reiterated the significance of preserving peace and unity as paramount for the region’s progress, urging chiefs to prioritize these values in their leadership roles. He emphasized that sustainable development hinges upon the protection and promotion of the region’s cultural heritage and traditions, cautioning against the encroachment of foreign influences.
HRM Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I further highlighted the urgent need for environmental conservation, particularly in curbing group hunting activities that threaten the biodiversity of the Savannah Region and called for a ban on group hunting to safeguard both cultural taboos and ecological balance, citing the detrimental effects of such practices on the region’s flora and fauna.
In addressing the upcoming 2024 elections in Ghana, the king emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing peace above all else and called upon Ghanaians to unite in safeguarding the nation’s peace, underscoring it as Ghana’s pride and a prerequisite for sustainable development.
The Savannah regional house of chiefs President also emphasized on the critical role of institutional structures in driving development initiatives within the region, urging the enhancement of existing structures, such as standing committees and judicial bodies, to facilitate more effective governance and decision-making processes in the region.
The King’s address serves as a clarion call for unity, legacy-building, environmental stewardship, and peace, laying the groundwork for a prosperous future for the Savannah Region and Ghana as a whole.
The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibriel, commended the king for convening such an important meeting to address issues affecting the people of the region and emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in discussing peace, development, unity, and environmental protection of the Region.
The Minister also highlighted the critical role of Traditional Areas and supported the call for the proper functioning of the house’s structures, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in delivering accurate reports to the President of the house for effective governance.
