The former President John Dramani Mahama on 6th December, 2024 in Damongo, Savannah Region commissioned a newly constructed modern Jakpa Palace for the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, a historic moment that marked a significant milestone in the cultural heritage and pride of the Gonja people.
The state-of-the-art palace, described as a symbol of dignity and a beacon of tradition, was commissioned in the presence of traditional leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Gonja Kingdom. In his address, Mr. Mahama expressed immense pride and satisfaction with the new edifice, which he described as a major step in honoring the legacy and prestige of the Gonja Kingdom.
“This new palace, the Jakpa Palace, restores dignity to the skins of Yagbon and is a source of pride for all the people of Gonjaland,” said the former president. He noted that the old palace had undergone several renovations over the years but was still unbefitting for the stature of the Gonja King. “As the English say, a decorated donkey is still a donkey. Today, however, we can rest easy, knowing our father now resides in a palace worthy of his status.”
The commissioning of the Jakpa Palace was a culmination of the efforts of a task force set up by the Gonja King, following the enskinment of the King. The task force was charged with designing and constructing a modern palace that not only honors the traditions of the Gonja people but also incorporates elements of Mande architecture, reflecting the origins of the Gonja people.
The palace is the centerpiece of a larger Royal Jakpa Compound, which will include a mosque, a museum, recreational facilities, and an astro-turf. Mr. Mahama noted that the compound would serve as a cultural and tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across Ghana and beyond. “When visitors come to Mole National Park, they will also come here to admire this beautiful palace, which looks like it was transported straight from Timbuktu,” he said.
In his remarks, Mr. Mahama highlighted the significance of the new palace in elevating the Gonja Kingdom’s reputation on a global scale. “This palace can host any guest, even the King of England, King Charles,” he remarked, emphasizing the grandeur and hospitality it symbolizes.
Mr. Mahama prayed for blessings, long life, and good health for the Gonja King, as well as peace and prosperity for the people of Gonjaland. He also used the occasion to encourage citizens to participate peacefully in the upcoming elections. “Tomorrow is election day, and I urge all of you to do your civic duty. Cast your votes peacefully and diligently, so that Ghana continues to be a country we are all proud of,” he stated.
The new Jakpa Palace stands as a testament to the rich heritage of the Gonja people and a promise of a brighter future for the kingdom. The event was a celebration of culture, unity, and progress, marking a new chapter in the history of the Gonja Kingdom.
