Kumasi, Ghana – [29th October, 2025] — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has held a training workshop for journalists to strengthen their skills in ethical and evidence-based reporting on migration with support from European Union Delegation in Ghana.
The three-day session brought together media practitioners from various regions, with the goal of improving public understanding of migration issues and reducing misinformation surrounding the subject. The media practitioners were selected from Northern Ghana.
The training was organized under the “ATUU – A Ghanaian-European Safe and Prosperous People’s Mobility Project on Migration Governance”.
Addressing participants at the opening ceremony, Camilla Taranta, IOM’s Chief Program Support Officer in Ghana, underscored the media’s influence in shaping public perception about migration and noted that the training was designed to equip capacities of practioners to report on migration with empathy, integrity, context, and human-centered approach.
“Migration stories must be told with empathy, accuracy, and context. Journalists are key partners in promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration,” she said Through this trainer of trainers module, IOM aims to create a multiplier program that will enable the media to share your knowledge and skills with colleagues across the landscape, she added
Resource persons guided participants through interactive modules on data-driven journalism, human rights protection, gender-sensitive reporting, misinformation, disinformation, Mal-information and countering stereotypes in migration coverage. Practical exercises and case studies encouraged participants to apply these principles to real-world reporting scenarios.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and transformative.

The workshop forms part of IOM’s continuous collaboration with the media to foster accurate and human-centered reporting on migration and to support Ghana’s broader efforts in promoting informed public discourse on the subject.
