His Excellency Most Rev. Julien Kaboré, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, has called on the Catholic Church in Ghana to rise as a “sentinel of hope” a prophetic voice that stands firm against corruption, injustice, and indifference in society.
Delivering his address at the opening of the 2025 Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) in Damongo on Monday, 10th November, 2025, Apostolic Nuncio Kaboré urged the Church to “keep watch during the night” and not surrender to the darkness of social fatigue, greed, or moral decay.

“In moments marked by conflict, corruption, and the silent suffering of the poor, the Church must make the voice of Christ heard with clarity and maternal firmness,” he said. “True peace does not come from negotiations or fragile power balances, but from reconciliation with God and with one another.”
Drawing from Scripture, the Nuncio described the Church as a sentinel, one who listens for the signs of dawn and refuses despair. “A synodal Church is not only participatory, she is prophetic,” he stressed. “She must stand in the night and answer the question: Watchman, what of the night? and her answer must always be hope.”
Archbishop Kaboré lamented the erosion of moral values, where “wealth is celebrated as success irrespective of the means” and the poor are “reduced to mere statistics.” He called on Christians and national leaders alike to restore dignity to public life and resist the growing tide of egocentrism and division.
Commending the Bishops for their deliberations under the theme “A Synodal Church at the Service of Justice and Peace in Ghana,” he prayed that their work would inspire renewed zeal for truth and unity.
“May the Church in Ghana continue to shine as a lamp for the nation a witness of reconciliation, justice, and peace,” he concluded, invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Anne, patroness of the Damongo Cathedral.
