The Damongo Old District Library in the Hangaline electoral area of Damongo fell victim to a devastating fire on Tuesday dawn, leading the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari to visit the scene for a firsthand assessment.
Accompanied by his deputy coordinating director, Mr. Dennis Osei, the presiding member for the Municipal Assembly, officers of the Ghana Library board in Damongo, the Assemblyman-elect for the area, Hon. Gorden Kumatey, and a unit committee member, Hon. Musah Kusubari inspected the extent of the damage caused by the fire that engulfed the facility, destroying its roofing, books, and other valuable properties.
The MCE expressed his commitment to addressing the situation promptly, assuring the community that the government would intervene to find a solution.
He also took the opportunity to caution residents against engaging in bushfires, emphasizing the potential societal harm they could cause.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire originated from a bushfire that spread through a garden, reaching the library’s walls through a fence.
The incident has left the community grappling with the loss of a vital cultural and educational resource.
As the community begins to recover from this unfortunate event, the West Gonja Municipal Assembly is expected to collaborate with relevant authorities to expedite the rehabilitation of the Damongo Old District Library and mitigate the impact on the local residents and their access to educational resources.
