The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Karimu Musah Kusubari has disclosed that, they are on course with the development of the West Gonja Municipality.
He made this known at the 1st ordinary meeting of the 4th session of the 8th assembly of the west Gonja Municipal assembly held on Thursday, 8th June, 2023 at the conference hall of the Savannah Regional coordinating council.
The meeting was in fulfillment of the constitutional mandate in the local Governance Act 2016, Act 936, which mandates the assembly to hold regular ordinary sessional meetings with the objective to review their performance, put in place effective strategies to overcome challenges of the assembly in order to realize their developmental goals.
The West Gonja MCE explained that, the development of every district comes from the peace and security it enjoys, noting that the municipal security council has managed the Damongo chieftaincy resolution processes, saying “the new Yagbonwura is working tirelessly behind the scene and very soon a road map would be put out for amicable and lasting resolution”, and therefore extended his gratitude to the chiefs for their cooperation and support to maintaining peace in the Municipality.
He however noted with great concern about the outbreak of conflict at Mempeasem and Lukula in the North Gonja District between Gonjas and Mamprusis, hence called on everyone to exercise restrain and support the security agencies to restore calm for lasting peace and security for a sustainable coexistence between the two ethic groups.
The Municipal Chief Executive stated that the assembly has received 10.53% of it’s district assembly common fund which has since been disbursed on assembly projects and programmes and awaits the rest of the funds to execute more projects.
On the side of education, Hon. Musah said, the vocational school in the Municipality has since been completed and the assembly is in the process of extending electricity and water sources to the building to ensure it’s full operation in the next academic year.
He further explained that, through the support of the Hon. MP for Damongo, the educational sector in the Municipality has seen some ongoing projects which includes; construction of 3 unit classroom block at Sori No. 2 under the MP Common Fund, construction of a fence wall at NDESCO under GETFund, supporting the GES to organize ongoing extra classes and mock exams for final year JHS students in the Municipality.
Touching on Water and Sanitation in the Municipality, he said Global communities is partnering with the assembly to implement water and Sanitation project aimed at promoting WASH in schools, communities and improve to household toilet and prevention of open defecation, indicating that out of 78 Communities, 24 Communities has been certified as open defecation free by the Environmental Health unit and World Vision, making the total number of communities.
In ensuring open defecation free in the area, he disclosed that the municipal assembly will launch a municipal Open Defecation Free (ODF) League Table to enable them identify the assembly persons and electoral areas practicing open defecation and celebrate and award those who practice open defecation free.
He also spoke on Health, stating that the construction of a CHPS compound in Kididilimpa in the Busunu is completed and awaiting handing over, adding that the MP, Samuel Abu Jinapor has sponsored the renovation of the Achubunyor CHPS, a 3 unit bedroom Nurses quarters and the ongoing construction of a 4 unit bedroom Nurses quarters to ensure the comfort of nurses at the facility.
He also indicated that there are ongoing projects under the health sector by the assembly with support from the MP includes; construction of CHPS Compound at Sori No. 1 under NHIA, Construction of Health center at Damongo, YRA under the ministry of Health and Delivery room at langantri and jonkponto under his (MP) personal initiative.
He noted that, as part of plans to ensuring quality health delivery in the area, the Municipal health Director’s accommodation is being renovated with Sori No. 2 being given a befitting CHPS and the construction of ultramodern office facility for the Municipal National Health Insurance by the Chief Executive Officer, Noting that the construction delayed due to land ownership dispute.
On Agriculture
The department of agriculture has benefitted from planting for export and rural development. 150 cashew seedlings, 150 accasia seedlings, 150 morunga seedlings, 50 Mango seedlings, 50 shea seedlings and 50 dawadawa seedlings have been supplied to a commercial farmer for planting in kojope under the Savannah Agriculture value chain development programme (SADEP), stating that the Municipality will be receiving some quantity of cashew seedlings from Ghana lands restoration and small scale mining project (GRLSSMP) and Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (CNFA)
Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty
The livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty implemented in the Municipality on behalf of the ministry of gender, children and social protection is 5,006 across 73 Communities.
Social welfare and Community development in collaboration with the national health insurance authority conducted a mass registration and renewal of NHIS for LEAP beneficiaries through which 369 members had their cards either renewed or registered within the first quarter of 2023.
The west Gonja Municipal chief executive lamented on the municipal high rate of road accidents especially, motorbike crashes and pedestrian knock downs. “In may 2023 alone, we lost 3 persons including a pregnant woman in busunu and two in canteen and Damongo township”.
The West Gonja MCE used the occasion to urged the general public to give the Ghana road safety authority officials in the Municipality the maximum support and cooperation to enforce discipline and road traffic regulations on the roads, especially motorbike riders.
