Mahama Shaibu, an Assemblyman for Daboya West in the North Gonja District in the savannah region has cleared himself with momo statements over his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of some Ghc 332,700 charcoal revenue collected from the Daboya area in August, 2021.
Mr. Shaibu Mahama cleared himself at a press conference held in Damongo on Tuesday, 16th May, 2023 where he broke his silence on his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of money gathered from the collection of royalties from commercial charcoal operators in the Daboya area.
According to him, clearing his innocence over the allegations became necessary after a section of the youth in Gonjaland accused him on a WhatsApp platform “Dankre be Lembu” of being part of a group that misappropriated some charcoal proceeds in 2021.
To further prove his innocence from such allegations, Mr. Shaibu detailed how the money was disbursed to some individuals and members of a local committee constituted to issue receipts to commercial charcoal operators in the community with the evidence of momo statement.
He explained that, he was a secretary to the local committee constituted by the Regional house of Chiefs and was incharge of issuing receipts to commercial charcoal operators who were given a window to get their products out from Gonjaland after a ban was placed on their activities in the Savannah Region.
He further alleged that he shared the proceeds to some individuals on the instructions of the Registrar of the Gonja Traditional Council.
He stated that he only received Ghc 6,000 as compensation from some Ghc 41,000 shared to the committee for their tiredless work in realization the Ghc 332,700 amount.
He further stated that, he came out with the information because his name is continuously being soiled in Gonjaland and he had to protect his reputation as a young politician and family man as his people were worried over the speculations.
