MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), has held a high-impact debate competition between two basic schools, Yabum JHS and Jakpa JHS in Damongo as part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The event was themed “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.”

The debate centered on the motion: “Teaching boys and girls the same thing about online respect and digital safety will prevent violence.”
Yabum JHS, speaking for the motion, clinched victory with an impressive 84 points, while Jakpa JHS, arguing against the motion, followed closely at 74 points. Both schools demonstrated exceptional knowledge on digital safety and gender equality, delivering compelling arguments, articulate presentations, and sharp rebuttals.

To acknowledge their hard work and brilliance, awards were presented to all participating pupils. The headmaster of Yabum JHS also received a Samsung tablet as part of the celebration of their triumph.

Following the contest, both schools appealed for WiFi connectivity to enhance their ICT education and broaden their digital learning resources.

The program was chaired by Mr. Kofi Apeater Odum, GES Director for North Gonja District and acting Director for West Gonja Municipal.

During the event, ASP Sarpong kumah, Savannah Regional DOVVSU Commander, urged students to see the DOVVSU office as a safe environment and encouraged them to confidently report any incidents of domestic violence.

Mr. Ebenezer Terkpeh, Health and Education Portfolio Advisor at the MTN Ghana Foundation in Damongo, announced that MTN is constructing an AI and Robotics Centre at KNUST, noting that the two schools will be among the first in the region to visit and benefit from the facility once completed.

Congratulations to Yabum JHS for emerging champions, and commendations to Jakpa JHS for their strong and spirited performance.

The event not only showcased the intellectual abilities of the students but also reinforced the urgent call to protect women and girls from digital violence through education, awareness, and empowerment.
