A 65 year old former Principal of BATCO, Alhaji Dr. Adam Zakaria has been elected as Savannah region’s Council of State representative with 14 votes.
The candidates for first ever Council of State elections in the Savannah region are Alhaji Adam Zakariah (65 years), Alhaji Lepowura MND Jawula (71 years) and Mr Mohammed Adam (47 years).
Alhaji Adam Zakaria won the historic race after winning 100% of the valid votes cast. All the fourteen (14) delegates from the seven (7) municipal and district assemblies of the Savannah region voted for his candidature as against that of Alhaji MND Jawula, who polled zero (0) votes and Mr Mohammed Adam, who also polled zero (0) votes.
The Regional Electoral Commission Director, Mr Johnson Akafia declared the election results which was held at the RCC conference hall, Damongo. All the 14 delegates cast their votes with no rejected ballots.
Speaking to the media after the victory, Alhaji Adam Zakaria said his first task will be to advocate for the appointment of the Regional Representatives by the president to help speed up development. This will also increase the numbers to two (2) in each of the six (6) newly created regions.
Alhaji Adam Zakaria also said he will push for the upgrading of the regional capital Damongo and, others to befit the status of regional capital.
He thanked his opponents for smooth campaign and also thanked the delegates, the electoral commission and all stakeholders for the smooth campaign and conduct of the elections.
Alhaji Adam Zakariah hails from Bole in the Savannah region and was the Principal of Tamale Bagabaga Training College till he retired in 2015.
