The Savannah Regional Minister Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril has appealed to the King and overlord of gonja kingdom yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I to help him bring an end to the commercial charcoal burning and logging in Savannah Region.
The minister made this appeal when he paid a courtesy call on the yagbonwura at the Japan Palace on Monday 29th March, 2021 to formally introduce himself to the King as the Savannah Regional Minister.
In his address, Hon. Saeed Muhazu said the menace of commercial charcoal burning and logging has destroyed the forest cover of Savannah Region which will have a bizarre impact on the region and generations to come.
“The future generations will not forgive us if we don’t act now to preserve our forest” the minister said.
“I promised under oath when I was being vetted by Parliament’s vetting committee that I will stop commercial charcoal burning and logging in Savannah Region when given the nod and I am on course to do that” Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril Jegede added.
Hon. Saeed Muhazu said he has given all commercial charcoal burners and logger a four week ultimatum to rapup on all their activities.
The Savannah Regional Minister also informed the Yagbonwura of his plans to among other things register all mining centres within Savannah Region so that a token of the gold mined from the Region will be sent to the Jakpa Palace which will in turn be used to the benefit of the people of Savannah Region.
Hon. Saeed Muhazu assured the Yagbonwura that his doors are widely opened to the cheifs and that he is ready to work with traditional leaders.
